What is Ruby? (Alumina)
Ruby Stone is a valuable crystal with Al₂O₃ (Aluminum Oxide) composition, belonging to the Corundum mineral group. The red colored variety of Corundum is called Ruby, and the other colored varieties are called Sapphire.
Mohs: 9 • Density: 3.9–4.1 g/cm³ • Formula: Al₂O₃
The characteristic red of ruby is due to the presence of the element Chromium Cr³⁺ within the crystal lattice. The amount of chromium determines the tone and saturation of the stone's color.
Formation and Color
- Formation: It is generally formed in Metamorphic and some Needle Magmatic rocks under high temperature and pressure.
- Most Valuable Hue: An intense red and slightly purplish hue (mostly Myanmar/Burmese Rubies) known as "Pigeon's Blood".
- Synthetic Production: Due to its high price, synthetic Ruby is widely produced today by the Verneuil method.
History and Meaning (King of Stones)
Ruby has been called the "King of Gems" (Ratnaraj) for thousands of years. Ancient Indians (Vedas) believed that this stone contained the unquenchable fire inside and thought that it gave invincibility and protection to its owner. In medieval Europe, Ruby was used as a talisman that brought health, wealth and wisdom.
Ruby is the noblest and most powerful stone. “He who has it will have all the blessings in the world.” - Hindu Mythology
Spiritual Power
- Nobility: Indispensable for old royal jewels and crowns; It symbolizes authority and luxury.
- Passion: It ignites the passion for love and sexuality, increases vitality and loyalty in relationships.
- Protection: It was carried by warriors to protect themselves from enemies and gain courage.
Physical and Chemical Properties (Mohs 9)
Ruby's unique position in the jewelry world comes from its high hardness and intense red color.
Hardness and Durability
With a score of 9 on the Mohs scale, it is the hardest natural mineral after diamond. It is extremely resistant to abrasion.
phosphorescence
Due to its chromium content, it fluoresces brightly in red when exposed to UV light (and in some cases, natural daylight).
Brother Mineral
Blue, yellow, green etc. all Corundum colors are called Sapphire. The only red one is Yakut.
Brightness
Although not as hard as a diamond, it has a vibrant, glass-like (vitreous) luster when polished.
Crystal System
It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system.
Specific gravity
It has a high density 3.9–4.1 g/cm³; This makes it feel heavy compared to its size.

Ruby Buying Guide (4C Rule)
The value of the ruby is determined according to the rules of 4C (Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat Weight), which are the diamond evaluation criteria.
1. Color
It is the most important factor. Pure reds (Pigeon's Blood), which are intense, vibrant, neither too dark nor too light, are the most valuable.
2. Clarity
Natural Rubies often contain inclusions (natural formations within the stone). Transparent stones with very few inclusions are rare and valuable.
3. Cut
The cut brings out the brilliance of the stone and the depth of its color. Oval, cushion and emerald cuts are common.
4. Carat (Carat)
Since large rubies are rare, their value increases geometrically as their carat weight increases.
Heat Treatment
Most of the Rubies you see on the market have been subjected to heating treatment to increase their color and clarity. This is an accepted practice in the industry.
Care
Although it is durable due to its hardness, temperature changes should be avoided. It can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap.
Ruby Quick Notes
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Ruby and Sapphire?
Mineralogically, they are both Al₂O₃ (Corundum). The only difference is that the color of Ruby is red due to the element Chromium, while Sapphire is blue, yellow or green due to elements such as iron and titanium.
Is ruby safe to use in jewelry?
Yes, thanks to its Mohs 9 hardness, it is one of the safest and most durable precious stones after diamonds in daily jewelry (especially in items that can be damaged such as rings and bracelets).
How can I clear ruby energy?
The simplest methods are to wipe it with a soft cloth or soak it in warm soapy water. It is appropriate to contact sunlight (good for red stones) or a Selenite stone to renew its energy.
