What is Chalcedony?

Chalcedony; It is a type of SiO₂ structured stone belonging to the cryptocrystalline/microcrystalline quartz family, consisting of a mixture of fibrous chalcedony and fine-grained quartz . Mohs hardness is in the range of 6.5–7 and thin banding/translucent structure is common.

Mohs: 6.5–7 • Density: ~2.58–2.64 g/cm³ • Formula: SiO₂ (Quartz)

Although it is most commonly associated with blue chalcedony ; It has shades such as white, grey, pink and green. Well-known species such as onyx , carnelian (agate red), chrysoprase (Ni-derived green) and agate are all different varieties of the chalcedony group .

Formation & Resources

  • Fibrous microstructure develops with silica precipitation in lava cavities, hydrothermal veins and sedimentary cavities.
  • Main sources: Turkey (including Eskişehir/Sarıcakaya area), Brazil, Namibia, Madagascar, India, USA.
  • Color/translucency; It is affected by impurities, trace elements and microstructure orientation.

History and Cultural Importance

Chalcedony; It was preferred for seals, ring stones and carving in ancient Greek, Roman and Anatolian civilizations. Among the rumors associated with the name of the city , Kalkedon (Kadıköy), on the opposite side of Istanbul, is also mentioned.

Soft tone, solid spirit.” — A saying frequently used by classical stonemasons

Frequently Asked Questions

Are chalcedony and agate the same?

Agate is a variety of banded chalcedony. So agate is a member of the chalcedony family .

How do I recognize painted chalcedony?

Be suspicious if the color is too saturated/bright. Color release may be seen in a wet cloth test; There are color intensity changes in the sections.

Is it suitable for prayer beads?

Yes. It is hygienic and durable thanks to its hardness and low porosity; Pay attention to the rope/tie quality.

Should I use an ultrasonic cleaner?

It is not recommended unless necessary; It may pose a risk, especially in stones with banded/fine cracks.
